Ontology Specification Draft

Abstract

The IMAGO ontology supports the formal representation of works, authors, manuscripts, printed editions, places, and toponyms, as well as the relationships between them, as attested in Latin geographical literature produced between the 6th and the 15th centuries. It is developed as an extension of CIDOC CRM and LRMoo, ensuring semantic interoperability with established cultural heritage standards.

Introduction back to ToC

The Index Medii Aevi Geographiae Operum (IMAGO) project (2020–2024) is an Italian National project that addresses the lack of semantically structured and interoperable resources for Latin geographical literature produced between the 6th and the 15th centuries. By combining expertise in medieval studies, philology, and Digital Humanities, IMAGO develops a semantically enriched knowledge graph based on Semantic Web technologies and a dedicated ontology that extends CIDOC CRM and LRMoo. The IMAGO ontology supports the formal representation of works, authors, manuscripts, print editions, places, toponyms and their relationships, enabling advanced data integration, querying, and analysis. The ontology supports the discoverability, interoperability, and reuse of cultural heritage data across institutional and disciplinary boundaries.
